Here’s a little press today from the local Asheville paper from the outdoor writers blog.
Want to try something a little different this weekend? Head out to the Asheville Muni Roundup.
This is the 6th annual gathering of the not-so-underground-but-still-very-selective group of folks who ride mountain unicycles, aka “Munis.”
The Asheville Muni Roundup is an informal, no-charge event that runs Friday through Sunday on mountain biking trails around the Asheville area, said organizer Jack Igelman.
“The past couple of years we held it in the Pisgah National Forest and charged people for the permit, for T-shirt, food, but it got expensive, so this year we’re not charging. We’re expecting 20-25 riders from around the Southeast. It is a small, niche sport.”
In its heyday, municycling attracted a large gathering in Moab, Utah of up to 250 riders, but now gatherings are small, regional and more informal, Igelman said. There are muni gatherings in New York City this weekend, Vermont, and California.
Igelman said he will host a cookout/muni ride at his West Asheville home Friday night, then on Saturday there will be trail rides starting at 9 a.m., and on Sunday, there will be an “epic” muni ride.
